Bedding - Composting
Initially, the gypsum absorbs moisture and maintains a fresher environment among the herd. It is effective in keeping livestock stalls drier and reduces the amount of wood shavings used. This environment is less attractive to multiplying fly populations and reduces the spread of bacteria, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment for the animals. The chemistry between the sulfur in the gypsum and the ammonia in the animal waste reduces the loss of nitrogen into the air, increasing air quality and also the value of the manure as a future fertilizer source. Adding gypsum to manure during composting has not only been proven to reduce fly population and the release of odors but also methane, a greenhouse gas commonly associated with livestock.
